FDA Approval of Alzheimer’s Drug Causes Advisors to Resign

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating illness that affects over six million Americans aged 65 years and older. As Alzheimer’s (the most common cause of dementia) progresses, it gradually attacks areas of the brain responsible for communication, reasoning, memory and basic daily tasks. As baby boomers continue to age, the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is expected to climb. There are few options available for treatment. None cure Alzheimer’s or treat the underlying damage to the brain. On June 7, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Aduhelm (aducanumab) as a treatment available to those with Alzheimer’s. Facial recognition software flawed, as government use increases

Facial recognition software, often used by law enforcement to identify and track criminals and terrorists, is seriously flawed — just ask Michael Oliver of Detroit, one of several people who have been wrongfully arrested and jailed. Or ask the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The Department of Commerce agency found in a December 2019 study that facial recognition systems are 100 times more likely to misidentify minorities, particularly Black and East Asian people. Multiple lawsuits have been filed either seeking millions in damages for false arrest and imprisonment or to sharply curtail the use of facial recognition systems. At least 27 people in the United States have been exonerated after faulty bitemark matching put them behind bars — but not before they lost a combined total of 450 years of their lives to a forensic “science” never grounded in research.  Forensic odontologists are specialized dentists who assist law enforcement and medical examiners. Their expertise can be essential in identifying human remains — comparing badly damaged bodies to dental records, or estimating an age at death.  But a slew of conviction reversals have demonstrated that bitemark matching, the practice of linking bitemark evidence on a body to a particular suspect’s teeth, often implicates the wrong person. Who needs a warrant? Law enforcement can just buy your private data

Instead of using search warrants to get information about people’s activities, some federal agents may just go shopping. Taking advantage of what started as a marketing tool, federal law enforcement, intelligence and military agencies apparently are buying American and foreign citizens’ cell phone data from brokers. This allows them to get private location information, for example, without having to go through the hassle of asking judges to grant search warrants, according to published reports, records and advocates. In an era of deep political division and more contentious confirmations of the three most recent justices, the arguments for cameras in the U.S. Supreme Court might be stronger than in past decades. It’s not a new idea. The first bill proposing to allow  cameras in the nation’s highest court was filed in 1937.
