DOJ Investigating Southern Baptist Convention

August 26, 2022 by Piper Jones Castillo

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), with its 47,000 churches and nearly 14 million members across the country, is under investigation by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). The investigation comes in the wake of widespread reports of clergy sexual abuse and inactions by church leaders to solve the problem.  On Aug. 12, a statement concerning the federal investigation was released by a group of SBC leaders, including SBC Executive Committee members, seminary presidents and heads of mission organizations.  “Individually and collectively each SBC entity is resolved to fully and completely cooperate with the investigation,” the statement said. The DOJ’s involvement comes after the Southern Baptist Convention released the results of its independent investigation three months ago. SBC church officials knew of the sexual abuse against adults and children … [Read More...]

Southern Baptist Convention Confronts History of Sexual Abuse

June 8, 2022 by Piper Jones Castillo

A reckoning many people consider a long-time-coming is underway within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).  Results of an investigation released last month revealed that for over 20 years, sexual abuse victims attempting to report crimes to leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention were often ignored and, in some cases, bullied or vilified. At the same time, the church leaders focused on keeping the claims away from the public eye instead of protecting the victims and halting the rampant abuse. The SBC is the largest Protestant denomination of Christianity in the United States, with 47,000 churches. The incidents of sexual abuse were reported at Baptist churches, schools and youth camps across the country. Uncovering Southern Baptist Convention Sexual Abuse   Although rumors of abuse circulated throughout the SBC for … [Read More...]

Larry Nassar Sex Abuse Survivors Are Suing the FBI

April 28, 2022 by Katy Boose

Months after USA Gymnastics and over 300 young female athletes finalized a settlement agreement, 13 survivors of sex abuse by Larry Nassar have turned their attention to the FBI. Nassar worked as a doctor for Michigan State University and for the Olympic gymnastic hopefuls of Team USA. Survivors are suing the FBI, seeking $130 million, to hold the FBI and government agents responsible for sexual assaults by Nassar, which happened after July 2015. Plaintiffs claim that the FBI investigation into Nassar put female athletes in the cross-hairs for more than 17 months of assaults after the first allegations surfaced while the FBI stood by and failed to act. After USA Gymnastics told FBI agents in 2015 that three athletes said they were assaulted by Nassar, the FBI failed to open a … [Read More...]

A bill aimed at increasing the legal rights of employees who are victims of workplace sexual assault is finally signed into law. The legislation, called the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act, easily passed the U.S. House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support. The law bans forced arbitration clauses in new employee contracts, which require victims to pursue their cases in private mediation with the accused individual. For years, leaders at the University of Michigan have been entangled by sexual misconduct allegations involving employees, both past and present. The fallout continues.
